FOR SMART ENTREPRENEURS
Why am I a business coach, after a 20+-year career in search engine optimization?
Because, I’ve seen what stuck does to a person’s profits, self-esteem and productivity.
Hi! My name is Heather Lloyd-Martin.
When I was growing up, I watched my parents struggle with their small bed and bath retail business. They sold amazing products that weren’t offered anywhere else.
But, they weren’t making money, they were working all the time, and the business was practically the only thing they talked about.
Even as a teenager, one thing was clear. My parents were stuck. They were scared. Instead of asking for help, they were ashamed, burned out, and out of ideas.
(And, sadly, they had to close the business.)
Fast-forward 10 years. I start my own business, and it takes off like a rocket. I hitched my career wagon to Google and search engine optimization, and was blessed with fantastic opportunities.
I travelled the world, speaking to fantastic audiences about things I love. I built an agency, downsized, and repeated the pattern a few more times. Heck, I even shared a trade magazine cover with Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin.
That was cool. You probably have had similar “career high” moments.
Then, the recession hit. Digital marketing got slammed in a big way. My Fortune-50 clients had massive layoffs. I knew I had to restructure my business fast if I didn’t want to work at Starbucks (which actually sounded like a reasonable alternative some days.)
I was stuck.
And, OMG, the fear….
Fear of what friends, colleagues, and the competition would think if they knew I was struggling and burned out.
Fear of taking free time, because “down time” means I had time to think.
Fear that all the cash reserves would dry up and blow away.
(Maybe you’ve felt like this, too.)
I rebuilt my business, created some great training products, and honed in even more precisely on my target market. I hired a business coach to help me tighten up my processes.
The success started zooming along again. Forbes named me “the pioneer of SEO copywriting.” I was training great clients, traveling (but not too much), and seeing the money flow again.
Despite the outward success, I still felt things weren’t quite right. I was still working crazy hours. I was still so focused on my business that I rarely made time for friends. Taking a vacation seemed almost impossible – especially one that took me off the grid.
I was stuck again. This time, in a new way. Things felt…meh. I wasn’t happy.
It wasn’t external forces causing my discomfort — it was my mindset and limiting beliefs. I was doing this to myself.
And, that’s when things started to change.
I decided I was tired of things being “okay.” I deserved more than that.
I also decided to focus on things that filled me up and brought me joy. I work fewer hours, but everything I do is 100% focused on my sales and productivity goals. I have more time for me, and less time for focusing on low-value activities that bring me the bad kind of stress.
And yes, I took vacations. I’ve even taken two month-long vacations rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. No email. No texts.
It was wonderful.
Plus, my situation prompted me to go back to school and became a certified business coach.
You see, I’ve always had a knack for helping people reframe their situations and live life in a new way. I’d conduct a training workshop and see the light bulb turn on above my audiences’ heads – there were seeing new opportunities when previously, it was all doom and gloom.
I’d consult with clients and mentor colleagues who were facing their own stuck moments. Together, we’d untangle their stress, reevaluate their values and create a new way of doing business.
I’ve seen what happens when people go from stuck to unstoppable. It’s cool.
And you can have that, too.
